Would like to look and feel like a fabulous Mother of the Bride. Nothing old fashioned or dowdy!

Posted on: March 8, 2012

QUESTION: Daughter getting married and need help! Despite ‘formal’ wedding in a country church, the happy couple want a ‘laid back’ day , the reception is in a barn. Groom’s mother wearing duck-egg blue, four bridesmaids all dressed in pastels, different styles to suit them, which leaves me! I don’t want to seem overly smart – no hat! – but want to look my best. I am ‘young’ for my age  but am struggling with a dress. Only dress I’ve seen so far is an Issa, three quarter sleeve, in pale colour but ….any ideas? For once in my life I’d like to look and feel really good and make my daughter proud.

ANSWER: Congratulations on your daughter’s wedding – you must be over the moon and so proud! The wedding sounds like it is already very well organised indeed. Don’t worry, we will help find you something fabulous to complement your gorgeous silhouette and fit in with the wedding party … with not a dowdy garment in site.

1. ISSA DRESS £332: I absolutely love the sound of the Issa dress you have seen (I wonder if it’s similar to this). It’s the type of style that will look fabulous on your silhouette and is both stylish and elegant. The gathering at the front accentuates your waist definition and the fluid skirt gives a feminine touch. Issa dresses double up perfectly for beach holidays too – that’s how versatile they are. If this is too low cut for your liking simply add an embellished brooch.

2. VIVIENNE WESTWOOD ANGLOMANIA DRESS £310: Vivienne Westwood cuts a gorgeous, shapely dress. She manages to inject curves into women’s figures with her soft fluid fabrics that make clever twists and turns. This style will flatter your silhouette and create a gorgeous looking shape. This dress comes in a navy blue with a deeper red pattern, or a plain red. But for the purposes of this wedding the champagne colour works best (although the deep red, on eof your favourite colours, is stunning)!

3. HOW TO ACCESSORISE: Use your accessories to add colour, texture and a few catwalk touches, for an understated but ultra-stylish look. Style the pale champagne colour of these dresses, with a bright clutch bag and an animl print heel. Or , the other way around. Go for an animal print, or textured clutch, and a bright heel. You don’t have to match the colours of your shoes and bags. Shake it up a bit to keep your look young and fresh!

A heel in an ice-pastel colour will work with the rest of the wedding party’s tones. Orange is one of your favourite colours and these kitten heel courts from Hobbs in a coral pick up on the pastels’ catwalk trend. A kitten heel works perfectly with your tall frame. Complement the outfit with a sparkly clutch like this Anya Hindmarch piece  (or one in an animal print).

Alternatively, if you prefer a coloured clutch, like this sorbet orange DVF one, then a stylish snake skin effect shoe would be the perfect partner.

The great thing about all of these pieces is that you can wear them over and over again, after the big day. Your clutch will finish off a simple pair of straight leg jeans, white blouse and black tailored blazer for a casual dinner. It will add a bit of dazzle to a long dress for a black tie event. Your shoes would work with your denim look, as well as a Safari style shirt dress and statement cuff, for a  lunch with friends. All the best for the big day! Congratulations once again.
