STYLE ADVICE: I am a petite size and have a 50th birthday party straight after work. What do I wear?

Posted on: June 18, 2012

QUESTION:  I have a surprise 50th birthday party to go to and before that I am at work and have no time to change. I always struggle to find a nice elegant, glamorous piece to wear.

ANSWER:  We receive so many requests for a great day to night dress and once a season we find the very best around and include them in one of our weekly e-mail specials. The key to this quest is finding a flattering dress that is perfect for you, fairly simple in style and then to add some fabulous accessories that take you from boardroom to va-va-voom!

To begin, everything centres around one garment and the Little Black Dress fits the bill perfectly. There really is no better choice for day to night look and finding the one that hits all the right spots on you makes this little number a valuable investment piece. Not only does it look formal but it acts as the perfect canvas for a bit of dressing up or down.

For you with your well proportioned, balanced figure a dress that accentuates your waistline looks fabulous on you. Your petite frame should be taken into consideration and we’re sure you’re aware of the brilliant brands that cater for this especially. Next, Wallis, Dorothy Perkins, Fenn Wright Manson all have great ranges that we love to recommend for your silhouette although you shouldn’t rule out others. We’ve selected a few that we think would look great:

1. Wrap style dress, Next:  First off is this brilliant wrap style dress from Next in the picture above. The draping detail falls beautifully on your figure and the v-neckline is great for your bust shape:

2. Ruffle front dress, Dorothy Perkins: As we’re edging towards the summer months and as you are going from day to night then we love this figure skimming tailored sleeveless dress with it’s heavenly draped detail and frill. By taking off a cardigan or jacket from your daytime look, layering on some evening accessories and a heel this dress changes completely from a sculpted day dress to a sexier evening look:

3. Dipped back hem dress, Oasis:  This dress from Oasis is more directional this season with it’s cute dipped back hem. The belted waist detail looks great on you:

4. Beige tailored jacket, Fenn Wright Manson: During the day for work, depending on your dress code, you can go for a simple cardigan in a colour or give all these dresses a hint of formality with a tailored jacket. If you don’t already have a favourite black or coloured one then go for one that fits beautifully and it will go on to become a pivotal piece in your wardrobe. For you it’s important that you wear jackets that suit your petite frame and show off your waistline. This season’s love for peplums are perfect for you as they exaggerate an hourglass effect. We love this cream one from Fenn Wright Manson that ticks all your boxes.

Or go for a simple black one that has a fitted silhouette with a nipped in waist, like this piece from Next.

5. Day shoes Michael Michael Kors: Both of these jackets have a hint of glamour to them so that when dressed up would look great in the evening. Push up the sleeves of both for a more relaxed feel to your tailoring and swap your daytime shoe which could look something like this gorgeous pointed toe heel:

…to something altogether strappier, oozing evening chic. We love these from Reiss that have a sneaky little platform for extra height:

6. Evening clutch, New Look: Then you should ditch your day bag for a sparkly evening clutch like this amazing statement patterned one from New Look that totally ups the vibe and adds a splash of excitement to your LBD:

7. Earrings, New Look: Add a pair of drippy evening earrings to finish like these also from New Look who as you can see have a great collection of accessories this season:

and hey presto… you’re ready for the party! Tara x
