STAR STYLE: Lady Gaga graces American VOGUE and why purple is not just purple

Posted on: August 9, 2012

Do you remember that scene in “The Devil Wears Prada” where uber-editor Miranda gives assistant Andie a withering look and scathingly educates in her the art of fashion explaining why a blue belt is not just a blue belt. It’s Cerulean. And it’s all thanks to Oscar de la Renta that the colour swam it’s way through designer catwalk collections, high street stores and finally into Andie’s big blue fluffy jumper she was wearing.

That’s what I was reminded of when Lady Gaga posted a sneak peak of her second cover shot for American VOGUE on her twitter account. She graces the biggest September issue ever in a body-busting, curve-boosting, waist-cinching Marc Jacobs gown. Show stopping! And looking at the glorious deep radiant tone of the gown you can see how ‘purple’ is not just ‘purple’. It’s a bit of magenta. It’s a bit of a lot of things. And filtering down from this radiantly luscious tone from the Marc Jacobs A/W 2012 collection shown months and months ago, you’ll be seeing a lot of gorgeous deep tones trending on the streets. In particular this “is it purple or magenta or deep pink” shade. And here we map the movement of this colour through some of the new season pieces available on Dressipi now:

From body-busting floor sweeping designer gown we take you all the way through to a curve-boosting little high street number from Oasis £65 in that gorgeous deep tone:

Not just for dazzling at night time or on the cover of VOGUE, let this colour boost your working day with this waist-accentuating ruche front jersey dress from Precis Petit £39. It’s easy to style this with a tailored black jacket, but a fitted grey bouclé piece would look fabulous too:

From “it it a purple or is it a magenta tone” we blend through the colour spectrum to wintry purples. This is a fabulous floor sweeping stunner from Milly £434. Style this with a fluid sequin jacket or a fabulously chic faux fur piece.

Style this pleat detail dress from DKNY £277 with this pearl and gold chain detail Zara belt (rather than the black fabric one that comes with the dress) to give it a touch of the must-have trend for embellishment.

And if you prefer going down the accessories route when it comes to channeling a trend or a fabulous tone these simple H&M ballerinas £9.99 will pack a unch when styled with black opaques and little black dress. They’ll also dress up a pair of jeans for when you want to look casual…but chic.

We also love a great clutch. You know that by now! This Call It Spring suede magenta clucth is the ideal aw/ must-have:

And finally, we totes love this Mulberry Dorset Tote. So you see, in fashion land, technically purple is just not purple and you don’t have to be a VOGUE cover girl to indulge in this heady tone and colourful trend. Natalie x
