PERFECT FOR YOU: Making your tops work for you

Posted on: September 7, 2012

It’s easy to forget about those wardrobe basics and hard-working essentials when it comes to the tantalising fashion offerings out there. Often we get caught up in the whole “what should I be wearing this season” excitement. Which is why we’ve handpicked three perfect for you tops this week.

We’ve made sure to cover the all important essential – something in a neutral tone – like a great t-shirt that will slip effortlessly under a tailored tuxedo blazer, or a baroque inspired embellished jacket. This is the type of piece that will quietly partner a sexy peplum pencil skirt or work trousers styled with a belted cardigan and necklace. Every wardrobe needs one of these “don’t even have to think about it” pieces. Gap has introduced a brilliant range of silky jersey tees called the Gap Pure collection. They remind me of a high street version that is a cross between the masters of the luxe tees Vince and James Perse. These tees (with v-neck and round necks to cover all shapes) have long or short sleeves and fall just below the bottom making them perfect with leggings, skinny jeans and ideal for layering.

We’ve also selected something in one of your favourite or investment colours. A top with a stylish detail like this pleat effect piece from ASOS £22 as well as in a colour will dress up a casual look (think pair of jeans and ballerinas) but styled with those separates we mentioned above (peplum detail skirt, work pieces, embellished blazers) outfits start to become just that little bit more interesting:

And then we come to prints. If you want to introduce a catwalk trend to your outfit do it with a print. Accessories such as scarves and ballerinas are an ideal way to do this if you are prints-shy. If you want to brand out a bit more go for a top. This season it’s all about clashing geometric prints by wearing them top-to-toe. Alternatively a stylish printed top is a perfect evening piece for any wardrobe. Style this Sandro silk top £135 with your favourite pair of jeans or some of those must-have Zara coated black cigarette pants plus killer heels and you have a fabulous go-to evening look. This is also the type of print that is not going to date making this something more of an investment piece than a trend-dabbler. Natalie x
