STAR STYLE: New York Fashion Week s/s 2013 trends snippets

Posted on: September 13, 2012

New season alert! And no we are not talking about the fact that we have just slipped into the frosty chill of autumn/winter 2012 and are holding off for as long as possible on those opaque tights. No! We’re talking spring/summer 2012. Well, this is fashion land after all. New York kicked off what promises to be a strong season with collections that embodied the essence of a city that never sleeps. I have been catching up on Tommy Ton’s street style snaps on style.com and all the insider gossip on the shows at SHOWstudio.com where you can experience them live through the fabulous digital front-row discussions. Here’s a quick round-up of a few trends:

BRIGHTON ROCK STRIPES: Call it candy. Call it jailhouse rock. I call it a Brighton Rock special…somebody somewhere in the textile world has been hanging out on Brighton Beach having a quintessentially British moment. Well that’s what I like to think. It all started with Marc Jacobs. He stripped back that gorgeous, opulent lush Cat In The Hat madness of his autumn/winter collection to offer us a catwalk of crisp candy-stripes in structural shapes. And then Oscar de La Renta the master of fantasy and romance spun us a curve ball (just one) with a black and white striped ball gown. It’s either a print you’ll be doing from head-to-toe or dabbling in with a blouse Helmut-Lang style. Expect to see a LOT of this on a high street near you…next summer.

WILD COLOURS: And I mean really, really wild surfer girl fluos contrasted with all these fluid, floaty, ladylike shapes. Remember those pretty pastels and ice-cool shades of last spring/summer? Designers have turned up the fluorescent heat on that soft palette with a fantastic, wild concoction of colour madness. You can even colour co-ordinate the streaks in your hair to your dress like at Oscar de la Renta. If you want to channel this beauty trend now click here to shop the hair streaks at Debenhams!

THE POWER SHIFT: They don’t mess around those American ladies. The power suit of the 80’s has long been replaced by the glamour power dress. Or the First Lady shift. Think glamour by day in … power styles. This is a look championed by Michelle Obama who is no stranger to a fabulous dress in equally fabulous prints that is pure day chic. And even if the colours are low-key it’s all in the shape. Looking at the designer who launched the concept of power dressing for women Donna Karan … her collection sees a fluid, floaty, deconstructed shape that’s as sexy as it is stylish. Yes, it’s the glamour day dress. And I love it! Natalie x
