PERFECT FOR YOU: Making a versatile trouser work for you

Posted on: September 28, 2012

Looking at the spring/summer 2013 catwalk collections as they ping in from around the fashion capitals of the world, you can’t help but be bowled over by the cacophony of mad colours. And, as mentioned in yesterday’s blog, in addition to the onslaught of the ‘glamour shift’, next season trousers have a staring role to play, think fluid fabrics and a techni-coloured-dream palette. But that’s all next season. And what if you just want to ‘throw together’ an easy, works-everytime look that is both you and fabulous? That’s where this week’s Perfect For You email comes into fashion play. We’ve handpicked a fabulous wardrobe solution – a pair of trousers in black or dark navy which we feel is up there with best of the must-have neutral shades.

Gone are the days of black trousers being relegated to the realms of the tailored work trouser suit. ‘Versatile’ doesn’t have to just mean ‘practical’. This season we’ve gone all touchy-feely with texture being high on the trend agenda. Channel the sumptuous baroque mood with these Zara satin flock trousers. Continue along the textured theme with one of those cool quilted tops from the new designer-collaboraton JW Anderson for Topshop . The top has a square cut and the soft volume balances out the ultra-slim fit of the trousers. Style with a pair of must-have velvet shoes like these Balenciaga wedged brogues  (H&M has some fabulous velvet platform courts) and sling Topshop’s crossbody bag  over your shoulder to complete your outfit for a bit of street style cool!

For more of a lady-who-power lunches and then goes out to dinner, the asymmetric hemline of this Helmut Lang top  forms a stylish contrast to the straight cut, slim fit Elie Tahari trousers . If for example you wanted to inject a bit of curve into your shape this play on proportions creates a fabulous illusion and injects a bit of ‘ooomph’ into a simple straight cut trouser. Glam things up with Sergio Rossi’s vampy stiletto courts, and this last-a-lifetime Anya Hindmarch bag.

A tailored wide-leg trouser performs a fabulous balancing act. For example, for those with wider hip proportions the width in the trouser draws the eye down, whilst for those with broader shoulder proportions the width in the trouser will balance the shoulder area out. Remember to wear separates that complement the shape of your trousers whatever they may be. With a wide leg trouser like these Evans black wide legs add a bit of definition either at the waist with this Wallis ruched front top  or style with a tailored blazer. A wide leg needs a heel to really work those proportions in the most flattering way. Style with a touch of daytime bling in the form of these Dune embellished wedges and complete with a timeless Whistles black tote bag. Natalie x
