STYLE ADVICE: What should I wear to work?

Posted on: October 8, 2012

QUESTION: Hello I am looking for every day clothes to wear to the office, dresses and skirts. I have a budget of $300.

ANSWER: If you have a look at your Dressipi Must Haves you will see what styles suit your shape and why. For you it’s all about softening the look of your broad shoulders (think necklines that are a little lower for example a v-neck or a drape) as well as finding clothes to flatter your lovely shape. When thinking about work pieces, look for styles that work effortlessly with each other so that you can create a number of outfits with a few key pieces. With that in mind here are a number of ideas for versatile work pieces we hope that you will like:

1. Next little black dress £45: We love a chic figure-flattering little black dress. These pieces are perfectly versatile and will take you from work-to-dinner-to-weekend with a simple change of accessories. This shift dress has a sculpting waist-accentuating detail perfect for your shape. The low neckline softens the look of your broad shoulders. For work you can style this with a fitted cardigan worn belted – like this dark navy piece from Banana Republic and add a stylish necklace if you want to dress it up a bit. If you wear a black fitted cardigan with this add a contrast coloured skinny belt for extra definition.

2. Topshop blazer £65.99: You could invest in a fabulous black tailored blazer that will work with so many outfits in your wardrobe (see the Zara link). Alternatively to add a modern touch to your wardrobe why not snap up one of the season’s must-have bouclé style jackets. This Topshop piece will work a fashion dream styled with your chic black work shift or a great pencil skirt. For the weekend or an evening out add a pair of skinny jeans, a silky blouse and a killer pair of heels. Wear the jacket unzipped about an inch or two at the neckline to flatter your shoulders.

3. Zara black dress £45.99: For a softer work look, this piece from Zara channels a bit of YSL magic. The low v-neck is perfect for breaking up your broader shoulder line. The bell sleeve will balance out your hip-to-shoulder ratio. You could style this with a belt or simply wear it as it is. It will sit perfectly under a blazer and makes a great evening piece too.

4. New Look dark grey pencil skirt £14.99: Snap up one of the season’s must-have curve-boosting pencil skirts. Because this piece is ultra-fitted, style with a v-neck jumper in a standard fit or a soft fluid blouse to add a touch of flattering volume up top like this drape front jersey top form H&M. Either jacket shape will work beautifully with this style. You could also pair your fitted cardigan with this if you wanted to go for a top-toe ultra-fitted style. The fact that it’s a cardi keeps the look work-appropriate and toned down. Then just add a a fabulous pair of heels and a timeless work tote. Natalie x
