WARDROBE WONDERS: Breathing new season life into a classic Breton stripe top

Posted on: January 9, 2013

Some things just stay the same. Like the fact that each spring/summer season you’re going to dig out your tried and tested Breton stripe top trends or no trends. Whilst stripes are big in every way this season, the classic Breton does not fall into this bold  ‘Brighton rock candy’ theme as I like to call it. It’s more of a timeless wardrobe basic that took its inspiration from the navy and white stripe knitted shirts that by law in 1858 became part of the official uniform for the French navy in Brittany. In 1917 Coco Chanel took these tops off the backs of sailors and put them into the wardrobes of women. Today even perfume and Diet Coke bottles are clad in a classic stripe – all thanks to Jean Paul Gaultier. Last year I snapped up a classic stripe from Boden, (you can find the same the pieces in stock this season £25). Although, in style spirit, I am not really a casual stripe top type of girl, it’s an easy piece to re-work to suit your mood or to update with a touch of the new season…and here’s how:…Natalie x
