WARDROBE WONDERS: Why I love a statement accessory

Posted on: February 14, 2013

Navigating your way around the amazing world of fashion week can be a hazardous style task … never mind front-row fashion, that’s soooo last season! Thanks to photographer Nick Knight’s live panel discussion’s at SHOWstudio, front-row fashion has taken on altogether different meaning. Firstly there is the issue of colour co-ordinating with the set. For the Menswear shows this meant a very dark all black set with heavy leather arm chairs in black and black walls, so there was a danger that dark clothing would result in us panellists looking like talking heads. That didn’t stop anyone from wearing black. Including me! For Womenswear it’s all cool whites. Secondly there is the issue of keeping ones modesty in tact – the camera angles are low, there are no tables in front of us …so ultra-short skirts are hazardous.

I decided early on to stick to my favourite little black dresses and turn my legs, heels and accessories into a feature. Why not huh! Flesh coloured fish net tights and pink suede Manolos and a wild turquoise lurex cardi from Issa over an LBD dealt with the darkness of Menswear; and black fish net tights and pink Manolos accompanied my Alexander McQueen dresses for womenswear. Easy. In addition I was lucky enough to be given some gorgeous pieces to wear from MADE jewellery. MADE is a Fairtrade company with pieces made in Kenya to support the community. You can find these fabulous statement numbers at Topshop and on the MADE site. I love large wrist cuffs so this Shikali Cuff £25 is very me. I decided to also try something that is not usually me and cannot wait to try out this gold disk necklace. I am not much of a necklace girl but I love the jingle-jangle sound it makes and it looks fabulous against a black roll-neck jumper or draped at the open neck of a classic white shirt. I also chose this metallic clutch from Kzeniya whose latest designs are available on Dressipi. I love clutch bags and even though this is perfect for evening I will absolutely be using it by day.
