WARDROBE WONDERS: How to wear a statement necklace

Posted on: April 18, 2013

With anyone who is anyone sporting spring/summer’s statement jewellery, it is a trend that is hard to miss- and one that I definitely wouldn’t want to. Celebrities from Olivia Palermo to Heidi Klum have all been seen wearing show-stopping pieces, and I am determined to get in on all the sparkly action. As always this season’s love affair began on the spring/summer 2013 catwalks, with big players such as Gucci, Chanel and Christian Dior wowing the fashion world with jewels, pearls, and vibrant colours.

Necklaces are hugely popular right now, and it’s the bigger, bolder, and shinier the better. I love this look, and am a big fan of the concept of accessorising a simple or classic outfit and turning it into something super special. There are so many amazing showpieces out there that it is hard to choose just one, so I intend to build up a whole catalogue of sparkly neckwear. For now though, I went for this gorgeous piece from ASOS which I had already spied whilst working on our site, and instantly fell in love with.

This design in particular is quite minimalist as far as statement jewellery goes, so it’s a good choice for anyone who is still unsure. I did stop for a second and wonder if it was verging on cheap-looking, however after some deliberating I settled on the idea that it all depends on how I wear it…and I intended on wearing it well, of course. Statement pieces can be a little scary at first as you may not be too sure how to wear them, but believe me; it’s not as tricky as you think. Although a piece like this would look great for an evening outfit to add some glam to a subtle shift or a silky blouse, you must remember that it can also be a great addition to a casual outfit too.

Here I have teamed the necklace with a pair of faux leather trousers and a white jumper (both from H&M), and a cute pair of ankle boots, and it has instantly added that extra bit of interest to an otherwise simple and casual outfit. It stands out against my monochrome ensemble, so it was the first thing people noticed- I got lots of compliments!

The most important thing to remember when sporting a statement piece is to keep the rest of your outfit subtle and understated, so as to let your accessories do all the talking. Although ASOS have a great selection, there are some other wonderful pieces to choose from, such as this pretty Sunset Stone Collar from Topshop or this Double Flower Neckalce from Reiss . But if you’d rather a less sparkly look but still love the statement trend, try this Wood Pendant Necklace from Cos.

For everyone out there who is toying with the idea of being bold with their jewels; go for it! If nothing else, the endless compliments are bound to be an incentive.
