LUST HAVES: Next season the high street is all about Saint Laurent

Posted on: May 29, 2013

There were a lot of grumblings and rumblings when Hedi Slimane’s rock meets grunge Saint Laurent autumn/winter 2013 collection hit the catwalk. But once the smokey cloud had settled it transpired that fashion buyers and the press were purring over those hardware embellished biker boots, irreverent ripped denim and lumberjack style check shirts. Kate Moss slinked into one of his spangly barely-there black mesh catsuits hot off the a/w catwalk to attend a Paris fashion week bash and twitter was all a twitter about those studded black biker boots. Because whatever the grumblings and rumblings by those fashion front rowers may have been what really sells is the bottom line. And next season the bottom line is ripped and embellished and dark and broody – nowhere more so than on the high street.

As we trawled our way through the succession of press days over the last few weeks the one stand-out designer influence – over and over again – was Slimane’s Saint Laurent collection. There he was in the genteel world of Jigsaw in a twist of biker leather and spin of plaid yarn. Denim rips and heavy metal accessorising brazenly took pole position at New Look and at M&S the Courtney Love inspired world of what was once YSL whispered out in the layering of animal print faux-fur and check coats. I am in love with the denim embellished mini skirt (pictured above), black Peter Pan collar blouse – and yes those boots. I might have to start doing a bit of heavy metal fashion DIY on my old GAP denim mini skirt. Scroll down to see how to start channeling this mood now. Natalie x
