STYLE ADVICE: I have to wear flats, be smart but not too ‘office-y’ for work. Are dresses passé?

Posted on: August 19, 2013

QUESTION: I have to wear flat shoes in my job (guide in stately home), be smart but not ‘office’ wear: I am 5ft 1 1/2″ tall and tend to wear dresses to make me look taller, but are dresses now passé?

ANSWER:  Dresses are great staple pieces to have in your wardrobe as they are extremely versatile and easy to wear as well as beautifully chic and feminine.  With that in mind, here are some ideas we hope you will love:

1. LK Bennett dress, £175: – As you are petite, when wearing a dress it is important to remember to avoid the mid length (between the knee and the ankle) as this can often make you look shorter than you are. A piece that sits on the knee is perfect as it won’t dwarf your frame and will look ultra chic. Although it is a little pricey, we love this poppy red dress which can be dressed up or down; for an evening occasion team with a pair of classy court shoes and some elegant jewellery. Incorporating colour into your work wardrobe will keep it fresh and distance it from ‘office wear’.

2. BHS dress, £19.50: – Here is a much cheaper alternative in a similar style. Team this colour with nude or black ballet flats and a fun, printed scarf- a touch of yellow would look fab!

3. Dorothy Perkins pumps, £23: – As you wear a lot of flats you are bound to have a gorgeous collection, however a woman can never have too many shoes. We love this contemporary navy pair with chain detail from Dorothy Perkins which will look great with the LK Bennett dress.

4. Mango scarf, £29.99: – A scarf can be a lovely way to accessorise an outfit, and will maintain your smart, elegant ensemble.

5. H&M cardi, £14.99: – A cardi can make a great cover up, especially if you are trying to avoid the corporate look. H&M is a fab shop which caters for all ages, and this simple open front cardigan is all you need to complete your look. Ria x

Good Evening,

Help please….I am celebrating my 30th Wedding Anniversary in September (in Majorca) and I would like an outfit suitable for the occasion, I shall be spending the day at a posh hotel, and then ending the day having a special meal with friends & family.
Please can you recommend a glamorous outfit suitable for the evening, which is suitable for my age ,body shape.

I tend to buy what is safe/same and not experiment with new styles.

Kind regards
Anita Woodburn
