STYLE ADVICE: I am looking for an elegant ‘mother of the groom’ outfit

Posted on: August 27, 2013

QUESTION: My son is getting married in December and I would love your advice on what to wear, bearing in mind I am only 5′ 1″?

ANSWER:  A lot of people think that if you’re a mother of the bride or groom, you must be more extravagantly dressed then any other guest there. However you will make the most impact if you are true to your natural style- in other words, you are comfortable and ‘yourself’. What’s great about your style is that you are naturally drawn to elegant and chic, yet contemporary pieces- perfect wedding attire!

1. Diane Von Furstenberg dress £309: – As you are petite it is important to keep your dress length at the knee or slightly above. This will ensure you avoid looking shorter than you are. This gorgeous figure-sculpting shift from DVF comes in a versatile cobalt blue shade. It is a chic investment piece and will look just as good for evening events and occasions as it would for a chic dinner at the weekend.

2. Linea dress, £130: – For a less expensive alternative, we love this navy lace dress by Linea. Like the DVF piece it is a little long for you, however if you got it taken up a tad it will still look stunning.

3. Coast jacket, £110: – As the wedding is in winter, you will need some form of protection from the cold weather. This tailored jacket from Coast is clean and neutral, so won’t take anything away from your dress. It is also a great wardrobe piece as it will style up a tailored pair of trousers or your favourite jeans to perfection.

3. Topshop courts, £58:– Metallic accessories can really set an outfit off. We love these gold leather courts from Topshop which are great for any age group (if you like a high heel).

4. Reiss courts, £135: – If you think a smaller heel will be more manageable, this taupe pair from Reiss will look fab.

5. Dune clutch, £35: – An embellished bag will add some extra glam factor to your outfit without being OTT. This sequin clutch from Dune is stunning and would work well with the Linea dress. Alternatively you could try a different shade of blue to style with the DVF dress, like this structured clutch from Coast. Ria x
