STYLE ADVICE: I need a dress I can dance in for a formal Scottish dancing ball

Posted on: September 30, 2013

QUESTION: I am attending a formal Scottish dancing ball. I need a dress I can dance in – mid calf or ankle length, and preferably short or no sleeves, with a skirt that allows for free movement. Ideally I’ll wear a tartan sash with it – mine is a “weathered Ulster” pattern which is sludgy brown colours (it was found in a peat bog….). It’ll need washing afterwards, so something that isn’t too high maintenance or delicate. Budget around £100.

1. Phase Eight dress, £160: – You can never go wrong with a black dress. This one from Phase Eight is over your budget but would make a great investment piece as it’s perfect for any glam occasion. The embellishment adds some sparkle to the soft jersey fabric which will skim flatteringly over your hips, and it’s a great shape for allowing movement. The fabric is ideal for home washing too. If the neckline is too low, you could consider a simple black cami underneath for a more modest look.

2. Monsoon dress, £119: – Navy is a great colour on you as it is one of your investment shades. This chiffon maxi dress is extremely elegant and would make a great look for a formal ball. Subtle bead detail adds just enough glitz, and the ruffle detail to the upper section will draw attention and balance out your hip-to-shoulder ratio. It does say that it is a dry-clean piece, however it is made from polyester so may not be as delicate as it seems. A pearl embellished clutch bag will look fab with this dress.

3. Kaliko dress, was £110 now £39.20: – We love this teal maxi with lace detail, which is another great colour on you. It is no longer stocked by John Lewis, but can be found on the Kaliko website at a great sale price. It would look perfect with gold accessories.

4. Warehouse dress, £65: – A red dress would look great with your ‘weathered ulster’ sash. This one from Warehouse is simple but chic, and the knot twist detail at the front adds some subtle shape and texture. Nude heels and clutch bag will complete your look.
