Another one of our favourite trans-seasonal fabrics – lace – comes over all ladylike on Nicole Kidman in a demure ivory and gold tinged shade and figure-flattering tailored shift by Marchesa. Get the look two ways with a gentle blush tone or a whisper of ivory. Metallic accessories give a cool modern edge but also keep things light and ethereal. The only hint of deep wintry shades should be in your nail varnish and lipstick. Natalie x

QUESTION: I’m a size 14 bottom and size 12 top. I need to show off my waist but not saddle bags/hips. What’s the best top and bottom to wear daily?

ANSWER: For you it’s all about tailored styles that emphasises your small waist, drawing attention to your most flattering areas. Trouser/skirt and top combinations are a great way to achieve this silhouette as well as beautiful dresses that will take you right through to Spring. With this in mind, we’ve chosen a selection that we think you’re going to love:

1. Diane Von Furstenberg trousers, £132.50: – DVF has mastered the art of making women look fabulous, and these tapered trousers are no exception. The pleated front creates the perfect fit for you and the high waistline really focuses the eye to your waist rather than hips. We’d suggest avoiding trousers that are clingy or tight around your thighs/bottom and always opt for a waist-defining high waist:

2. Weekend Max Mara £129: – Dark jeans are always more flattering and are much easier than pale jeans to dress up for the evening. A straight or bootcut style is the best for you, so we’ve chosen a high rise pair as this will accentuate the waist area:

3. Ted Baker skirt, £99: – An A-line shape is the go-to for you. Hip hugging skirts will cling and draw attention to the parts you want to hide, so stick to flared styles which skim past your hips and thighs, giving you the most wonderful shape! Tuck-in blouses for work or t-shirts for casual. This teal option is right on the money it can be worn with black courts for work and smart occasions, ballet flats and a fine knit sweater for drinks with the girls, or flat ankle boots and a long sleeve breton stripe top for weekend chic:

4. H&M top, £19.99: – It’s always worth buying your bottom half items first as these can often be tricker to get right. Once you have these sorted, look for tops you can mix and match, sticking to neutral colours as they’ll be more versatile. Embellishment around the shoulder or neckline is ideal for you as it makes the focus on your upper body, helping to balance out your proportions. There are so many gorgeous tops on the high-street at the moment, so we’ve picked a cream T which can be worn with all the above suggestions. As there is detailing around the neck, keep you accessories simple with a chunky cuff and a classic tote bag:

5. Banana Republic dress, £75: – With dresses, the same rules apply as before; a-line or fit and flare styles are you’re must-have fit as your waist will be the main attraction. As you mentioned that purple is one of your favourite colours to wear, we thought a berry toned flared skirt dress would be a strong option. The short sleeve and round neck means it is very suitable for work with either a chunky heeled court or pair of brogues or loafers, and can very easily be worn with boots for a more casual, stylish outfit. Rich, deep shades will look fantastic against your fair skin and hair, so don’t be afraid to veer from black or grey!

6. French Connection belt, £50: – A waist belt is one of the easiest ways to nip-in dresses and add the emphasis to your smallest area. Remember to team the colour of your belt with your shoes to give you a polished look. Karen x

I really wanted to try and find the exact high street replica of this dress because for someone who is not so crazy about print (me) unless it’s leopard print this piece is fabulous. It’s got that “I am sure I’ve seen it somewhere on the high street before” feel. But obviously I haven’t. Never mind, because you can channel the boho folkloric mood with this Zara number. You could almost be a dead-ringer for Heidi frolicking about somewhere in the Swiss Alps, but thankfully a fabulous gold tipped heel and a slick of Chanel lipstick should set you and your outfit apart. Just.

2looksOne of our most-searched for terms on the site was “leather” and it’s no surprise, given that it is one of the new season textures … especially when it comes to skirts. From slinky pencil numbers to flirty full pieces, mini to midi, high street to designer it’s all systems go when it comes to leather skirts. It’s also one of those perfect day-to-night pieces. Faux-fur and drape details are a great way to soften things up and have a bit of fun with slogans whether it’s you earrings or jumpers. Steer clear of leather on leather unless you are in top-to-toe Balmain or Alaïa or own a Harley Davidson and are a fully fledged Hell’s Angel.
