STYLE ADVICE: Looking for a cocktail dress for a black tie event.

Posted on: March 2, 2015

QUESTION: I have a black tie event to go to in 2 weeks and would like to buy a new dress and would love some help please! The dress doesn’t have to be long and grand, I’m up for short and modern but would try long if the right one came along.

ANSWER: The black tie event you’re attending sounds fabulous – what a wonderful reason to buy a new outfit!  A cocktail dress will be really versatile and can easily be worn on future occasions. Karen x

1. Banana Republic dress now £79.60:- Although big prints can often be daunting, there are some very sophisticated patterns on the high-street at the moment. We love this black and white number by Banana Republic, a wardrobe staple that can be worn with black tights and courts in the winter, or nude legs and strappy sandals in the summer. Glam it up with a metallic clutch bag or a pair of statement earrings:

2. Coast dress, £115: – On to something a little more demure! Navy is a really lovely alternative to black and also looks super all year round. As this dress is one block shade, add a pop of colour with a bright contrasting shawl. When it comes to shoes, metallics or neutrals work best with navy:

3. French Connection dress, now £84: – If you’d rather go with a dressier option, how about adding some embellishment? We came across this gorgeous dress by French Connection and couldn’t resist putting it in the mix. This 3/4 sleeve shift will accentuate your slim lines giving you a beautiful silhouette, just be sure to keep all accessories low-key allowing the dress to do all the talking:

4. River Island dress, £55: – You mentioned you may be after a bright dress, so we’ve found just the ticket! A strapless peplum style is elegant, chic and very appropriate for a black tie occasion. Similar to the sequin option, keep accessories simple by teaming this dress with black or neutral courts and a bag to match:

5. Zara court, £39.99: – Nude is a great go-to colour, especially for any parties in the summer months. These skyscraper heels will give your legs a longer, slimmer look and perfectly compliment any of the dresses mentioned above.:

6. Monsoon earrings, £16: – One piece of jewellery is all you need, we’d suggest either a pair of drop earrings or a jewelled bracelet.
