Valentine’s day falls on a Sunday this week so you’re most likely going to be date day-dressing …or both. But if you want to shape up for a chic or sleek date night look, any time of the year, turn to your wardrobe icon: the little black dress. When in doubt it’s the piece that’s going to work a dream time and time again, minimising any pre-date what-to-wear stress you might be anticipating. It’s a date after all. It’s supposed to be fun and you’re supposed to feel fabulous.

JACKET: I have this Zara jacket which I actually bought over a year ago and it’s such a great wardrobe staple I can see why they have repeat stocked this style. I am lucky though because when I bought my Zara jacket they made it out of a luxurious wool fabric. Not so this time – but as I say it’s become such a great wardrobe staple which I wear casually with jeans, and yes many times over my LBD’s on date nights. I also find that when I want something warmer than my biker jacket to wear for airport chic travel style this piece is it. It got me an upgrade once – all that tailoring really added first class polish to my look.

DRESSES: Depending on how you like to wear your dresses the Ted Baker piece on the left has a tailored fit and chic elegant feel and will double up well for an evening wedding. The Topshop racerback bodycon piece on the right has a sleek tight fit and channels the sportier athleisure trend, a mood that does not seem to be going anywhere too fast. This piece would be great for a casual look too, just add trainers and a denim or bomber jacket.

BAGS: A little touch of animal print goes a long way and a snakeskin print gives just the right amount of texture to this look. Add a clutch bag to your evening capsule wardrobe stash. Alternatively this hands free cross-body style is a good multi-tasking day-to-night piece.

HEELS: In a nod to Valentine’s day I’ve vamped these dresses up with a slinky red heel. You can style these with a slim fit black ankle length trouser + black tuxedo jacket + silky or peekaboo lace camisole for an alternative to an LBD date night look. Natalie x
