QUESTION: I’m in my 2nd trimester of pregnancy and I want to look more yummy mummy rather than frumpy mummy. I already have a 3 year old and my fashion sense went right out the window when I was pregnant with him so I really would like to feel nice in my clothes this time round.
Any tips suggestions for styling would be great, not many highstreet shops have maternity sections anymore.

ANSWER: Many thanks for contacting us and a huge congratulations on your second pregnancy. Strangely enough I too am pregnant at 18 weeks with my second child and my first is also three years old… what a coincidence… so I can completely empathise with you. Whilst feeling great it is getting to that stage where I have to now address the bump issue like it or not! You’re right that there isn’t a great deal of high street maternity pieces available but by looking carefully through your existing wardrobe and pulling out any looser fitting tops and previous maternity purchases you can give them a new lease of life with some great bump friendly accessories and a few key essentials. Here’s our list of great pieces selected just for you that we hope you’ll love:

1. New Look purple dress £29.99: We know from your Fashion Fingerprint that you love purple and this figure flattering empire line dress is a real maternity investment piece. The v-neckline flatters your bust and the shape will glide over your growing bump. With such a simple style you can dress this up or down making it fabulous for lots of occasions. Wear at the weekend with your favourite knitted cardi some berry coloured (maternity!) tights and a pair of ankle or knee length boots. For work style it under a tailored jacket (I will continue to wear my favourite piece of tailoring but open!) with a pair of mid heel courts and a printed scarf. For nights out add strappy sandals with as much of a heel as you can tolerate (it’s amazing how even a little one can make you feel much sexier and less pregnant!), a drippy pair of earrings, a fabulous clutch…and voila…. an incredibly hard working, multi-tasking dress. A bit like us Mums!

2. H&M floral dress £19.99: Another gorgeous dress with a beautiful floral print that was seen all over the catwalks this season is this easy jersey piece from H&M. It too can be dressed up or down for events or weekend lunches. Prints look great during pregnancy as they seem to disguise bumps slightly. This one has an element of fit and drape and that great v-neck which looks so good on everyone. Throw over a denim jacket for easy days and those heels and clutch for evening.

3. New Look dark skinny jeans £11.99: A good pair of maternity jeans is a must for most maternity wardrobes. We love this budget busting dark rinse pair from New Look which come in a perfect 30 inch leg length for your petite frame and the darker colour will be great on your silhouette narrowing your lower proportions. I’m currently on a mission to find the best maternity jeans as I find most too stretchy. They look great to start with but go beyond the point of comfort after a while and start to feel too saggy! These ones have more structure in the leg and a generous jersey waistband. Again, these can be dressed up for an evening out with the girls by adding a sparkly top and jacket or worn everyday with ankle boots and some fluid tops.

4. Topshop, t-shirt, £14.00: A few simple t-shirts are a great layering staple. Topshop do some that have cool detailing like a rolled sleeve or a raw edge which stop them looking like frumpy mummy tees and are great with skinny jeans. Wear with cardigans and boots or dress up in the evening with those heels and a statement jewellery which I’ll talk about later!

5. Asos patterned blouse £36: Asos have some great maternity pieces. This striking graphic blouse is a strong trend for this summer’s fascination with brights and graphic prints. It’ll look amazing with your skinny jeans and some cute ballet pumps. I love that this is not one of those cutesy, frumpy prints that you so often find in maternity wear. I would wear this pregnant or not!

Now for the fun part. You have your pregnancy basics and I really do think that a couple of dresses, a gorgeous top, some amazing fit jeans and t-shirts should get you through with some existing wardrobe pieces and really fab accessories. The best part about this is that as you can see we’ve picked pretty budget conscious maternity garments as this is such a short time and you won’t wear them again after (unless you give pregnancy another whirl… and with such a gorgeous new wardrobe it might be tempting!). The best advice is to invest in great accessories that you will wear way beyond maternity and that will change the mood and occasion of your pieces.

6. . Banana republic purple print scarf £39.50: A scarf is my most favourite pregnancy item. Choose large, soft, drapey ones that glide over your bump. They take emphasis off this area and give a polished edge. Wear this with your purple dress and with t-shirts and jeans. Hint to friends and loved ones that these make great gifts at this time and with a selection to pick from you can pretty much stick to the same basic garments but changing a print of coloured scarf will seem like a new outfit. They’re also invaluable afterwards if you plan on breastfeeding or just snuggling up baby when he or she arrives.

7. Topshop metallic pumps, £18.00: Invest in accessories that add a bit of luxe to a look. A metallic ballet pump goes with everything from jeans to a little dress By adding glamourous details it’s an easy way to look more finished and together especially on those days when you’re feeling wiped out and huge!

8. Topshop chandelier earrings £14.00: Our last tip is to invest in a piece of statement jewellery. These are bigger vintage style pieces like drippy chandelier earrings or crystal embellished necklaces and bracelets. Again, a heavenly detail will add chic to any outfit and the modern way to wear these pieces is during the day with t-shirt and jeans. Amazing jewellery is everywhere on the high street so have a browse for colours and shapes that you love.

Best of luck with your pregnancy. We hope that you find your specially edited pieces inspiring. Keep an eye out for our Maternity section that we are soon to launch on Dressipi for some more fabulous tips and the very best picks of maternity wear. Tara x
