style-iconThe BAFTA Nominations are out, and when it comes to the Best Actresses and the movies they are in … it’s all about big bags and little jackets. This week, nominees Emma Thompson in Saving Mr Banks (which I can’t wait to see) and Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine (seen it, love Woody Allen…challenging!) have inspired the Style Icon entry. Cate Blanchett’s wardrobe in Blue Jasmine was a true fashion feast with pieces from Chanel, Hermés, Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta storming the screen. Costume designers for Emma Thompson painstakingly trawled 60’s archives to recreate some fabulously stylish numbers to dress the creator of Mary Poppins. Really – it’s all about the little jacket and big bag. A perfect look for today, thrown on with a pair of jeans, or slinky pencil skirt or over a body-sculpting shift. Chanel will do nicely thank you. But so will a few choice pieces from the high street. As an alternative to that trusty wardrobe staple – the bouclé jacket – try a knitted cardigan-jacket, like this piece by H&M. And don’t forget to achieve this look, when it comes to bags bigger really is better. Natalie x

Grease has been on constant reply on the movie channels and it really is impossible not to watch. What an iconic movie. What an iconic pair of ultra-skin tight black almost glued on trousers! I could go on forever. But I won’t. You can get that slinky-dinky-Sandy-becomes-a-bombshell look quite easily these days thanks to the sheer volume of wet-look leggings, jeggings and jeans. Not to mention all those biker jackets. Really though for a more friendlier take on this sexy look dilute the concept with a pair of waxed skinny jeans and slim fit black jumper. Don’t do a leather on leather look. There are enough fabric, tweed and knitted style biker jackets out there and the quieter texture, like the jumper, will soften the look. But – don’t hold back on the red heels!…..Natalie x

Robert Redford. Swoon. I was watching his son on ITV this morning as he is promoting a film he has just made about dyslexia. Then I got to the office and Chris Evans was playing (on BBC Radio 2) Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head from the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid which stars Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Double swoon. Hence today’s Style Icon. Really I would have just loved to have made it all about Robert Redford. Next time. For a modern take on Katharine Ross’ dreamy, romantic, nostalgic floaty dress-on-bicycle look, I found this floaty silk-crepe dress by Chloé at The Outnet. Now, this sun dappled mood would not be complete without the bicycle, and since we are talking Hollywood and style icons and over all legends the Pashley Princess would be the bicycle version of these. If you haven’t seen Doris Day in Pillow Talk and A Touch of Mink, do…just to marvel at the unfolding fashion show that takes place in those movies. They really didn’t skimp on the wardrobe budgets in the golden era of old school Hollywood. In lieu of a touch of mink we’ve given you a touch of animal print faux-fur from Linea £20. It will sit quite happily with the bold red of this wool coat by Planet £249. If you are going to be indulging in any pillow talking or listening for that matter, these pearl earrings by M&S £7.50 will keep things pretty sweet. Natalie x

Rita Hayworth embodied the epitome of the femme fatale in this iconic movie, although her bombshell looks were immortalised both on and off the screen. The flame haired siren (she dyed her brunette locks) has said of all the attention she received: “Why should I mind? I like having my picture taken and being a glamorous person. Sometimes when I find myself getting impatient, I just remember the times I cried my eyes out because nobody wanted to take my picture at the Trocadero.” Hayworth’s Gilda gave us the ultimate figure-flattering, curve-boosting fashion in the shape of her slinky fish tail gown. Get the look with this show stopping red number from Coast. Natalie x

Hermès created the iconic Birkin bag for singer and actress Jane Birkin after Chief Executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to her on a flight (in 1981).  Birkin was really having a bad handbag day – all the contents fell out of her straw shopper when she placed it in the luggage compartment overhead… the rest as they say is history.  Aside from the designer handbag and of course Serge Gainsbourg and that song, Birkin absorbed and channeled all of that laid-back French chic into looks we simply love to love.
